WYWIAD: RYAN DAVIS (Berlin)

In which city was your debut album created? Is a place important for you creativity?

The album was created in berlin the city I live in. Berlin is in fact a melting point of creativity and many different things and cultures. You could catch a good vibe when you go trough the streets. The place itself isnt that important for me to create a record.. important is the mood im into, the way I feel at the moment and the freedom of doin what I want. Also to find the balance between producing and free time to find new inspiration is vey important for me. So in a way the city is a kind of inspirational place and influenced the album as well as my sate of mind influenced it.

Did you have any particular goals that you wanted to achieve when making the album?

When I started to do the album I didnt had any clue how to do it or how to build it. The only thing I knew was, that it is more freedom beside an ep and more space to do different things.
So finaly the album is a kind of a retrospective of what I have done, what I am doing and what I want to do in the future musicaly. Its a sum of what I collected over the years and the point iám at the moment.

You release it after six years of having been active on the electronic music scene... How long did it take you to create “Particles of Bliss”? Do you have a production process that you stick to when writing music?

The idea and to find the right workflow for the album was born in april 2012 when riley of traum suggested me to do one. First I produced a lot of small ideas and things that could be interesting for the album.. when I collected like over 40 small ideas I started to form out of this most of the tracks, wich went to another precise testing of myself how I feel the tracks and what tracks would make sense for the album. Most of the tracks come directly out of my mind.. it could be that im at the supermarket or driving in the ubahn and certainly those melodies get into my head and I have to write them down. As well there is days I just start to open my sequencer and try around till I get in a flow of composition.

In the last track of “Particles of Bliss” you appear also as a vocalist…

yes, I was walking around at night and I had this kind of feeling to do a vocal track..when I started I didnt had any person in mind who could sing, so just to fix the idea I started to drop the lines by myself. In the end I was pretty happy with the result and wanted to show this intimate side of my on the album, as its a part of myself.

Is there any person that you would like to thank for helping you with the album?

The album itself stands for me and my music, but it would have been done without riley having the idea of  doin it and pushing me to finish it. As well a lot of inspirational travels, muicians and friends ive met over the years where part of the process. To get the feeling and the feel understood by other is pushing you to stay as you are and to move on with what you are doing. So the support and the love for my music is keeping me doin this!

Before you became a full-time producer and dj, had you had some other kind of job or career?

I always thought I want to be a designer. I was pretty good at drawing and find different ideas to solve problem of different situations in design and ergonomics. So I started to study industrial design. The same time I found my deep love for the music and started to work pretty hard on this too. In the end I had to decide between the both creative ways which one to choose. Finally music did it and im happy with this decision.

From a personal standpoint, what was the moment you would consider a turning point in your music career?

I never had this big jumps in music career. I´ve grown myself step by step over the years. I know all those little things in the bizz and went trough them, happy and sad moments. There was some special things when you got in contact with people you admired or a track was sold more, charted or even got part of a compilation. One of the most surprising things was when depeche mode guys started to play spicyal sound on their concerts. From year to year I have risen a bit more and spread my network. At the point im now I feel really comfortable. Traum is the right label for my melodic stuff and its great we started to work together, the guys from areal label are fantastic people and I love to work and play with them.
My labels have grown and im in a situation to choose where I can put what. Thats a privilege.

You live in Berlin, the destination of many young artists, you also founded the Back Home label whose main aim is to support new talents… Do you have your own vision of young electronic music scene that you want to share with us?

I feel a lot of good guys growing up with melodic feelings which should be shown the the people out there. Also different types of style and genres. The idea behind both of my labels is to give young artists the chances to do their first steps and combine it with some better known friends of mine in the scene to catch the right attention. BackHome is now getting more and more electronica, instrumental, more free of what people understand those days when they hear the word club music or Dj music. The other side klangwelt is still keeping great melodies but keeps more the spirit in the direction of danceable tunes while back home gets more and more into the kind of alternative listening stuff. Both ways of music should have the same attention and club people shouldn’t forget about beautiful moments just relaxing and listen to awesome textures of sound.

What are you up to next?

I not really know where the next step will guide me to. Im really interested in kind of a band project but I need to figure out the right guys to work with. And surely there will be new eps coming, new stuff on my labels.. from this point everything is open again and I will just go where I feel the most comfortable and understood with my sound.

Can you tell us something more about the mix you recorded for us?

My mixes are mostly about the balance between clubmusic and listening music, I always try to tell a story and build feelings, try to create special moments. The mix consists some of my album tracks and some works of people which I really love to play and listen to. I hope people who listen to those will feel what I do.
