Sally Purcell (aka smoof / s:an) started her love-affair with electronic music back in the late 90s. Clubs such as The End, The Cross, (both now sadly closed), DC10 and Fabric, plus a stream of more underground parties, have all helped shape her musical tastes and direction. It was many years earlier, however, that she realised that music was an essential part of her life. She first started writing songs and little piano pieces aged 10 or 11 and used to spend many hours sat at her favourite instrument coming up with nice new chord progressions, playing with melodies and penning lyrics. So, for her, it was a natural progression to start to write the electronic-based music that so captured her imagination on those early trips into clubland… This wasn’t her first adventure into creating electronic sounds, however. Her parents bought her a synthesiser in her early teens, and she soon became consumed with making new, odd, sounds and emulating those she heard around her – Depeche Mode, New Order and Simple Minds captured her imagination back then. These early explorations, plus her understanding of music theory, gave her a good foundation as she started on her journey into production over a decade later. Sally has an extensive collection of music covering a wide variety of genres – simply, she loves music that has soul and depth and comedy and emotion and drama. In recent years she has been influenced by Stephan Bodzin, Extrawelt, Gui Boratto, Max Cooper, Ryan Davis, Olafur Arnalds, Ludovico Einaldi, N’to, Popof (to name a very few). Her own tracks, and the tracks she mixes all have commonality. She has a deep, hypnotic style, a love for haunting melodies as well as the intricate beats, beeps, clicks and glitches that are at the heart of Techno and the more minimal side of House… *********************************************** After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music (Aldous Huxley)
